In Remembrance
James R. East

July 22, 1931 – September 10, 2008

Professor and Dean Emeritus James R. East served 29 years as a tenured faculty member and associate dean of the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI before his retirement in 1996. In retirement, East continued serving IUPUI as a volunteer, teaching college-credit listening courses without pay for 11 years; coordinating Bookmarks, the popular, non-credit book-reading program; and serving two years as the president of the IUPUI Senior Academy, a campus support organization of retired faculty and staff. During his years at IUPUI, the professor also created and served 14 years as dean of IUPUI’s Weekend College, the world’s largest, in which college courses are offered on Friday evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays. Dean East conceptualized the idea of a Deans’ Day program for alumni. Programs, such as this year’s Homicide: From Crime Scene to Court, are a result of his dedication to providing lifelong learning opportunities to alumni.

Sponsored by the Central Indiana Chapter of the Indiana University Alumni Association and the alumni associations of the schools of Continuing Studies, Law-Indianapolis, Medicine, Liberal Arts, Public and Environmental Affairs, and Science.
